Description
Baby Scrub Jay Wants Food. One of the first days out of nest flying, this young Blue Scrub Jay followed it's parent to our feeder, and attempted to mimic and learn by grabbing some food. The parent was angry with the youngster and chased it back into the bush. A short while later a Cooper's Hawk appeared. I believe the parent was trying to keep the little one safe and did not want it flying all around with potential danger present.
The California scrub jay (Aphelocoma californica), is a species of scrub jay native to western North America. It ranges from southern British Columbia throughout California west of the Sierra Nevada. The California scrub jay was once lumped with the island scrub jay, and Woodhouse's scrub jay, collectively called the western scrub jay. The group was also lumped with the Florida scrub jay; the taxon was then called, simply, the scrub jay. The California scrub jay is nonmigratory and can be found in urban areas, where it can become tame and will come to bird feeders. While many refer to scrub jays as "blue jays", the blue jay is a different species of bird entirely.
The Western Scrub-Jay combines deep azure blue with dusty gray-brown and white. The rounded, crestless head immediately sets it apart from Blue Jays and Steller's Jays. Juveniles are grey and develop blue on their lower backs and tails, whille the head and shoulders remain grey under adults. These birds are a fixture of dry shrublands, oak woodlands, and pinyon pine-juniper forests, as well as conspicuous visitors to backyards. Western U.S. to Mexico.
