Description
Boating Off Belmont Shore Long Beach Abstract 2. Long Beach Shipyard and Oil Island off Long Beach, California, USA. It is a busy Sunday in April 2018, as a mix of sail and power boats travel near the Long Beach Shipyard (background) and the Oil Island (to the right).
The Port of Long Beach is the premier U.S. gateway for trans-Pacific trade and a trailblazer in innovative goods movement, safety, environmental stewardship and sustainability. As the second-busiest container seaport in the United States, the Port handles trade valued at more than $194 billion annually and supports 1.4 million trade-related jobs across the nation, including 316,000 in Southern California. As the industry navigates the “Big Ship Era,” the Port of Long Beach is one of the few U.S. ports that can welcome today’s largest vessels.
The Port encompasses 3,200 acres with 31 miles of waterfront, 10 piers, 62 berths and 68 post-Panamax gantry cranes. In 2017, the Port handled more than 7.5 million container units, achieving the busiest year in its 107-year history.
The oil island is one of four artificial islands, called THUMS Islands or Astronaut Islands in San Pedro Bay. They were built in 1965 to tap into the East Wilmington Oil Field. The landscaping and sound walls were designed to camouflage the operation and reduce noise, and they are the only decorated oil islands in the United States
