Description

Goldfinch in the Green Leaves I. In the midst of a tree with shades of green leaves, a small yellow Goldfinch is perched. Well hidden in the tree.

The Lesser Goldfinch (Spinus psaltria) is a very small songbird of the Americas. Together with its relatives the American Goldfinch and Lawrence's Goldfinch, it forms the American goldfinches clade in the genus Spinus sensu stricto.

Lesser Goldfinches are tiny, stub-billed songbirds with long, pointed wings, and short, notched tails.

Males are bright yellow below with a glossy black cap and white patches in the wings; their backs can be glossy black or dull green (particularly on the West Coast). They have a black tail with large, white corners. Females and immatures have olive backs, dull yellow underparts, and black wings marked by two whitish wingbars.

These are social birds that are often found in flocks, particularly in winter. They forage in treetops for insect larvae during the summer; in winter they eat seeds, buds, berries, and small fruits. They make very erratic movements south into the continental United States in some winters, when they can become common at backyard feeders. Away from backyards, they winter in forests and feed in both deciduous and coniferous trees, often at higher elevations. They breed in spruce-fir, pine-oak, pinyon-juniper, and aspen forests of northern North America and the mountains of the West.
