KiteBoarding 2. A kitesurfer off Long Beach, California, USA.

Kiteboarding is an action sport combining aspects of wakeboarding, snowboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, skateboarding and sailing into one extreme sport. A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water, land, or snow. On water, a kiteboard, similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard, with or without footstraps or bindings, is used. Kitesurfing is a style of kiteboarding specific to wave riding, which uses standard surfboards or boards shaped specifically for the purpose.

I spent an afternoon at a beach in Long Beach, CA recently... It is Rosie's Dog Beach with lots and lots of activity.... dogs on the beach, in the water, humans too.... as well as Volleyball, boxing and kids playing in the surf. On the water were kite boarders, sailboats, power boats, the Long Beach Oil Island, freighters, barges, and the Los Alamitos Pier and the Long Beach shipyard in the background.

In this photograph, one of the The THUMS Islands or Astronaut Islands or locally known as the oil islands appears in the background. The THUMS are a set of four artificial islands in San Pedro Bay off the coast of Long Beach, California. They were built in 1965 to tap into the East Wilmington Oil Field. The landscaping and sound walls were designed to camouflage the operation and reduce noise, and they are the only decorated oil islands in the US.
