Description
California Hooded Oriole - Male. Captured at dusk on a bare tree branch. The male of a pair that visit our yard. Because of his bright yellow and black, we nicknamed him "Pretty Boy."
Of 24 species of Orioles in the world, 10 are found in the U.S. Orioles are medium-sized birds with relatively long bills and long tails. The Hooded Oriole is found throughout the southwest U.S., from Texas to California. The adult male has a black face and throat and a yellow to orange body with black wings. The adult female is olive-green on the upper parts, yellowish on the breast and belly. In California, the male Hooded Oriole is yellow. This bird is in Orange County, California.
