Description
Mustard and Lupines 3.
During the spring, the Lupines and Mustard Grasses provide wonderful purples and yellows which grow together on the hillsides of open spaces in Southern California. Like our Poppy Superblooms, we have areas of superblooms of both these Lupines and Mustard Grasses.
Lupines (Lupinus spp.) are attractive and spiky, reaching 1 to 4 feet in height. Lupine flowers may be annual and last only for a season or perennial, returning for a few years in the same spot in which they were planted. The lupine plant grows from a long taproot and does not like to be moved.
Lupines grow wild in some areas of the United States, where they are hosts for the larvae of endangered species of butterflies. Wildflowers of the lupine plant are generally in hues of blues and white, although domesticated lupines offers flowers in blues, yellows, pinks and purples. Tall, spiky racemes produce lupine flowers similar to those of the sweet pea plant.
Hillsides this 2019 spring have erupted with brilliant yellow wild grass, known as Yellow mustard. Yellow mustard weed, more commonly called wild mustard (Brassica kaber or Sinapis arvensis), grows as a winter annual weed throughout the western parts of the United States, but a summer annual weed in cooler areas. Plants stand about 3 1/2 feet high on thick stalks and bear bright yellow flowers that give way to round, purple to black seeds.
