Description
Covered Bridge 1. Acrylic Painting.
Covered bridges evoke a special feeling about life in America. They make a person think about horses and buggies, gold rushes, barn raising and bygone eras when young lovers went “courting.”
They make people think of "The Bridges of Madison County." Frankly, who hasn’t fantasized about stepping into the shoes of Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood and recreating their meet-cute on a picturesque, covered bridge somewhere?
A covered bridge is a timber-truss bridge with a roof, decking, and siding, which in most covered bridges create an almost complete enclosure. The purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather.
According to Covered Bridges Today by Brenda Krekler, as many as 12,000 covered bridges once existed in the United States; that number dropped to under 1,500 by the 1950s.The National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges was formed in 1950.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) encourages the preservation of covered bridges with its Covered Bridge Manual By 2018, less than one thousand still survived in the US.
