Description
Veronica spicata Royal Candles in a landscaped garden display. The winter/spring rains of 2016-2017 in Southern California has brought out displays of gorgeous flowers. This landscaped parkway area has showy purples, yellow, reds among shades of green. Attracting butterflies and hummingbirds, this is a beautiful sloped hillside.
Veronica spicata Royal Candles (Royal Candles Speedwell) is an outstanding upright growing speedwell with large, attractive deep-green leaves and long blooming spikes of deep purple-blue flowers. Perennial plant. The plants are 10-12" tall x 12-15" wide. Veronica spicata Royal Candles (Royal Candles Speedwell) is an outstanding perennial and one of the showiest hybrids of this genus. A durable plant with a low, compact mat of attractive 2" long leaves, it puts on a stunning display of deep purple-blue flower spikes of over 12 " or more. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds, and deer resistant. 'Royal Candles' is easily cultivated in average garden conditions in sun to part sun locations. A standout bloomer, it colors the garden from late spring into mid-summer.
Plant taxonomy classifies the Veronica flowers primarily dealt with here as Veronica spicata 'Royal Candles.' The common name is "speedwell," but the common and botanical names are used interchangeably, below. 'Royal Candles' is a cultivar name.
