Description
The Goodyear Blimp - Spirit of America. Carson, California. 2002-2015. "Thanks for the Memories, California". Decommissioned August 2015.
The "Blimp" has traditionally referred to any one of a fleet of airships operated by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, used mainly for advertising and capturing aerial views of live sporting events on television. The term blimp itself is defined as a non-rigid airship without any internal structure, the pressure of lifting gas contained within the airship envelope maintains the vessel's shape. Since the launch of the Pilgrim in 1925, Goodyear has generally owned and operated airships of this type in its global public relations fleet.
One of three left flying in the U.S., this ship, "The Spirit of America", based in Carson, California, was determined to be decommissioned first, as it's exterior skin shows signs of deterioration. The other two will be be decommissioned by the end of 2015. They will be replaced by new airships that will feature digital technology. The end of an era, however, is a sad event, and this ship will go into the history books. She took 10 months to build and 2 days to dismantle.
