Description
Nine small birds are all vying for a drink from this small puddle. FiveCedar Waxwings are all on the left, while four Western Bluebirds are all on the right. Thus, the title: Stay on Your Side!
The Cedar Waxwing is a sleek, crested, brown bird, larger than a house sparrow. The Waxwing has yellow on the belly, white undertail, and a bright yellow band at the base of the tail. Their habitat is open woodlands, fruiting trees, and orchards. They fly and feed in compact flocks.
The Western Bluebird is a bit larger than a sparrow, appears round-shouldered when perched. Head, wings, and tail blue, breast and back rusty red. Females are paler, duller, with rusty breat, grayish throat and belly. Breeds from S. British Columbia, western U.S. to mountains of central Mexico. Habitat is scatted trees, open conifer forests, farms. In winter, semi-open terrain, brush, deserts.
Both species are migrating through Southern California (December 2014).
