Description
2 Pintailed Whydah.
The pin-tailed whydah (Vidua macroura) is a small songbird with a conspicuous pennant-like tail in breeding males. It is a resident breeding wild bird in most of Africa south of the Sahara Desert. They are known in their native Africa as Koningrooibekkies.
Males have striking, black and white plumage and unusually long, showy tails during the breeding season. The bill is bright red. The female and non-breeding male have streaked brown upperparts, whitish underparts with buff flanks, and a buff and black face pattern.
Pin-tailed whydahs are among a handful of nonnative birds that have become naturalized in Orange County. Experts speculate that these exotic bird species originally came into the country as caged birds. Over time, released birds and escapees formed feral flocks. Its song consists of rapid squeaking and churring typically given from a high perch.
